Every day, Kenyans send millions of shillings to strangers on the strength of a profile photo and a promise. Direct M-Pesa is the single most dangerous way to pay someone you do not know — not because M-Pesa is unsafe, but because of what happens after you press send.
What actually happens when you send money directly
An M-Pesa transfer to a personal number or till is instant and, for practical purposes, irreversible. The money lands in the recipient's wallet in seconds, and your relationship with it ends there. If the seller does not deliver, your options are begging, reporting (slow, low success), or writing it off. Safaricom reversals exist but require the recipient's cooperation or a lengthy process — by the time it moves, the money is usually withdrawn.
Direct M-Pesa says: I trust you completely, forever, with no evidence and no recourse.
What happens when you pay through escrow instead
- You pay the same way — an ordinary M-Pesa STK push to your phone.
- But the money lands in escrow, not the seller's wallet. Both parties see it is funded — SMS and WhatsApp confirm instantly.
- The seller delivers against real, locked funds — no fake payment screenshot can imitate this.
- You inspect. Happy? You release and the seller is paid to M-Pesa in seconds. Problem? You dispute and the funds freeze for human review.
The payment feels identical to the buyer — same prompt, same PIN, same speed. The protection is in where the money sits between paying and confirming.
Side-by-side
| Direct M-Pesa | M-Pesa via escrow | |
|---|---|---|
| Money goes to | Seller's wallet instantly | Locked escrow — nobody spends it |
| Seller sees payment | SMS (or a fake screenshot) | Verified funded status by SMS + WhatsApp |
| If goods never arrive | Money is gone | Funds freeze, dispute reviewed, refund possible |
| If buyer never confirms | N/A — seller already has it | Deadline expiry / dispute resolution |
| Time to set up | 0 seconds | ~1 minute |
| Cost | Standard M-Pesa charges | Small escrow fee, no M-Pesa charges for users |
When direct M-Pesa is fine — and when it is not
Send money directly to people and businesses you know: family, your regular fundi, the shop you use weekly. Use escrow for every first-time stranger deal — Jiji finds, Instagram sellers, new freelancers, deposit payments, digital goods. The dividing line is simple: if you could not describe the person to the police, do not send them money directly.
